Sixteen years ago today, March 10, 2010, during what was supposed to be a minor surgical procedure similar to a wisdom tooth extraction, I was diagnosed with stage IVc “terminal” cancer, a very rare head and neck cancer called carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma.
My oncology medical team told me I had less than 90 days to live.
What followed was a brutal season of treatment: a radical neck dissection, multiple surgeries and procedures, weekly chemotherapy, and daily radiation.
Through it all, God healed my body. What doctors expected to end my life became a miracle they could not medically explain.
Over the years people often ask me, “What was the secret to surviving terminal cancer and the treatments?”
For me, it was peace.
Philippians 4:11–13 says:
“I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Even though many muscles, glands, nerves, and lymph nodes were surgically removed from my face, neck, and shoulder, my body has continued to adapt and heal.
Today I am simply grateful, content, and excited about life.
Thank you to the many family members, friends, medical professionals, and prayer warriors who stood with us during this strange, difficult, and miraculous journey.
Sixteen years later, I’m still here, grateful for every breath and every opportunity to press on!
